The group is dead!! White could start in any corner, but then Black plays in the opposite corner, and there's nowhere to make a nose.








 
If Black needs to capture the group, he just starts filling in the eye. White might as well play elsewhere. After , White can capture the three black stones, but ...










 
... then Black just plays back in, and White is left with nowhere to make a nose.








If you like, it's quite a good idea to set this position up on a board and try out various ways for White to defend himself. You'll soon find there aren't any that work.
