This is the web page of the Twickenham Go Club. We meet to play the game of Go, the ancient board game from the Far East popular in Japan, China (where it is known as Weiqi) and Korea (where it is known as Baduk). An attractive feature of the game is the handicapping system which allows players of widely differing ability to play on even terms.
We have about six or eight players who play regularly, and others who drop in occasionally. Our playing strengths range from 1 dan to about 15 kyu. We are happy to welcome beginners to the club and to teach them to play.
We meet regularly on Wednesday evenings from around 7.30pm at the The Alexander Pope Hotel, Cross Deep, Twickenham TW1 4RB in south-west London. You will find us in the restaurant section at the back of the main bar. We usually play quite late, up to midnight sometimes.
The Alexander Pope Hotel is easily accessible by public transport. We are about 15-20 minutes walk from Twickenham Station. On exiting the station, turn left and walk down into the town centre. Continue through the town centre into Cross Deep. The Alexander Pope Hotel is about 500m south of the town centre. Our nearest station is Strawberry Hill (about 30 minutes from Waterloo). Exit Strawberry Hill Station and turn left into Tower Road. Continue for 500m to the mini roundabout on the main road and turn left into Cross Deep. The Pope's Grotto Hotel is 200m ahead on the left. Total walk time about 8 minutes.
Alternatively, take train or underground to Richmond. Then get a 33 or a R68 bus outside the station heading for Fulwell/ Hampton Court. Alight at the Pope's Grotto stop just outside the Hotel.
Cross Deep is part of the A310, the main road from Twickenham to Kingston. The Alexander Pope Hotel is about 500m south of Twickenham town centre. It is a large floodlit building, easily visible on the west side of the road. There is parking in front of, behind, and underneath the building.
