London Open 28/12/03-31/12/03

127 players attended the 30th London Open, held again at ISH, Great Portland Street and successfully run by Geoff Kaniuk and the others from CLGC. The main tournament was again a major in the Toyota-Pandanet European Go Tour and had an exciting climax. After 7 rounds top players with 6 wins were Dutch student Emil Nijhuis and 12 year old Li Shen who lives in London. They had already played each other (Li beat Emil), so had to play others on lower scores. If they lost it was a four-way tie. In fact they did. Emil to France's Lionel Fischer by a half point and Li to Chinese player Wenhao Li. So after SOS tie-break the order was: 1. Wenhao Li (5 dan China), 2. Emil Nijhuis (6 dan NL), 3. Radek Nechanicky (6 dan CZ), 4. Li Shen (5 dan China) all on 6 wins; 5. Ning Li (6 dan USA), 6= Benjamin Tauber (5 dan DE) and Lionel Fischer (4 dan FR), 8. Matthew Cocke (5 dan UK), 9. T.Mark Hall (4 dan UK) all on 5 wins; 10. Young Kim (5 dan UK). Players on 7 wins out of 8 were Dominic Schuhmacher (9 kyu CH), Janne Jalkanen (4 kyu SF) and with 6 wins: Hichem Aktouche (12 kyu FR), Thomas Pototschnig (6 kyu DE), Uwe Glauch (4 kyu DE), Esa Seuranen (2 kyu SF), Per Schachter (1 dan DK). All winning 6 or more got a wooden go stone and all players on 5 wins got a certificate; from the UK: Tim Hunt (3 dan), Jim Sadler (1 dan), Jiri Keller (3 kyu) and Ron Bell (4 kyu). Furthest traveled prize went to David Frankel (1 kyu) from the USA. Ken Dackombe got the youngest player prize.

About 56 players played groups and then 16 played a knockout in the Lightning on 30/12/03. Jiri Keller and Jim Sadler made the last 16 for the UK. Ari Kauppi and Hichem Aktouche made the semi-finals, but the Lightning winner was Emil Nijhuis (6 dan NL), beating Radek Nechanicky (6 dan CZ) into second by 1 point in an exciting game. In the continuous 9x9 three players dominated. Using the Leiden Squareroot Formula the winner was Hichem Aktouche who won 27.5/36, second was Jiri Keller with 23/36 and third William Brooks with 21/35.
