Final round win against Spain

Another slightly more scratch team than usual (Matthew couldn't play again) for our final game against Spain proved more successful with a 3:1 win (probably).

The probably is because Toby was playing on Pandanet for the first time and he and his opponent failed to manage to set the time limits correctly and play their game. This game had been set up at the last minute as Spain couldn't raise a 4th board until the day of the match. So, since Toby's opponent was much weaker and would have needed to finish early in any event, he had allowed Toby the win.

In other games Andrew and Jon both gave their opponents a serious opportunity to kill significant groups, but these weren't taken, and they both captured other groups in return to win by resignation. As Andrew says "I won too, but not before turning a safe 20+ point win into a fight for life of one of my groups with 17 moves in 1 and a half minutes! But fortunately after I lived he forgot he had a group I could make into an L group so I killed that and didn't need to finish the byo yomi period."

Des describes his game: "I lost my game by 3.5. I was winning, but got lazy in the yose and let him live in seki in my large corner." Another doh...

The season is now over and the best we can say is that we managed to avoid relegation, winning just 3 of our 9 matches, with 2 draws. For more details, see the BGA Euroteams page

Thanks to Will Brooks, as team captain, for organising our matches despite many communication problems.

Hopefully we'll do better next year!
