European Youth Go Championships 2014: How to get to Bognor Regis

Butlins Bognor Regis Resort,
Upper Bognor Road, Bognor Regis,
West Sussex, PO21 1JJ

Directions

  • Road

Bognor Regis is just off the A27 trunk road at the end of the A29 from London, and on the A259 coastal road.

To get to Butlins, turn left at the roundabout at the end of the A29, on to the A259 Hotham Way. After the first roundabout you will see the resort on the right. The entrance is the right turning at the next roundabout.

Day visitors may not park on site. Turn right at the roundabout where you can see the resort (High Street), and turn left at the next roundabout into Gloucester Road. The public car park is on the left just before you get to the seafront. Friday evening it is free after 18:00, all day parking for the other days is £7.00. The Butlins day visitor entrance is by the car park entrance.

If you are travelling overland from Europe, Bognor Regis is about 2 1/2 hours from Folkestone (for Eurotunnel) and Dover (for Dover - Calais ferries). Newhaven (ferries from Dieppe) and Portsmouth (ferries from northern France) are also convenient. The suggested route is M20, M25, M23: it is not recommended to travel along the coast road from Dover or Folkestone.

  • Air

The recommended airport is London Gatwick. This is Britain's premier airport for low-cost flights to Europe, and is only an hour by train from the venue. It also means that you do not need to go through London. From Gatwick Airport take a train to Bognor Regis.

From London Heathrow, take the underground (NOT the "fast train to Central London", the Heathrow Express) and change at Hammersmith onto the District Line to get to Victoria, from which you can catch a train to Bognor Regis. Total travel time about 2 1/2 hours.

From London Luton, get the shuttle bus to Luton Airport Parkway station, then take a "First Capital Connect" service going to Brighton. This train goes straight through central London. Change trains at Gatwick Airport (see below). Total travel time about 2 hours.

From London Stansted take the "Stansted Express" to London Liverpool Street, then the tube to Victoria (Circle Line), and a train to Bognor Regis. Total travel time 3 hours.

Southampton Airport is convenient, but it only serves a few European destinations.

For all flights early booking is recommended to get the best prices.

  • By Train

Bognor Regis is served by every half hour by a train service from London Victoria via Gatwick Airport. It takes less than 110 minutes from London Victoria and less than 70 minutes from Gatwick Airport. Please be careful to get in the correct (usually rear) portion if the train splits at Horsham.

The best website for times and fare information is that of the train operator Southern Railway.

Children under-16 travel half-price or less. There are discounts for groups of passengers travelling together and currently a Kids for £2 ticket when travelling off-peak with an adult .

The train fare from Gatwick Airport to Bognor Regis (standard class) is £24 for an Off-Peak Return. If you travel before 09:30 on a weekday, in either direction, then you have to get an Anytime Return for £31.00.

The train fare from London (Victoria or London Bridge) to Bognor Regis (standard class) is £32.80 for an adult Off-Peak Return. If you travel before 09:30 on a weekday then you have to get an Anytime Return for £52.80.

You can also get a train to Bognor via the Coastway (Portsmouth - Brighton) service, changing at Barham. You can travel south avoiding London by travelling via Reading and Gatwick or via the Reading, Winchester and Portsmouth/Fareham route

To get to Butlin's from the station, turn left at the ticket barriers and leave by the side exit, where there are taxis you can hire to take you there. It is about 15 minutes to walk however: continue straight ahead on the left-hand side of the street. At the crossroads, cross by the zebra crossing (not forgetting in the UK traffic drives on the left-hand side of the road).

Continue ahead (Lyon Street), crossing a small side road, until the crossroads, with mini-roundabout and a view of the sea. Turn left here and keep walking, crossing to the right-hand pavement when possible. Keep straight, including at the turning with a mini-roundabout.

At this point the path separates from the road and passes the entrance for Butlin's Wave Hotel. Keep following this path for another five minutes, along the outside of the site, if you need to get to the Butlin's main entrance.

  • By Bus/Coach

This is possible, and is cheaper than by train, but there are very few services per day at this time of year.
