Teaching Online

Running online teaching events

This page has been written by Toby Manning and Martin Harvey, and is based on their experience in running on-line teaching events for a group of young players.

To run an online teaching event, you need two things: a platform for demonstrating Go, and a communications channel. We recommend using OGS for the former, and Zoom for the latter.

This is what we have done for an event with two teachers. Our experience is that it is useful to have a third person in overall charge (the "controller").

Here is a step-by-step approach:

  • We assume that the controller has a Zoom account so that the event is not subject to the "40 minute" rule.
  • The Controller must set up the ability in Zoom to set up rooms (admin/Room Management).
  • The controller sets up a Zoom meeting.
• At the appropriate time, the Controller starts the meeting. Immediately enable Screen Sharing for all (share screen/advanced sharing options/All participants can share).
  • Set up the rooms that you need (create breakout rooms/assign manually)
  • At an appropriate time, move the teacher and the relevant students into each room. Please note that once someone is in a room, they can only communicate with others in that room.
  • The controller should stay in the Main Session (ready for others to join the meeting) but can visit each room if they wish.
  • Each teacher is then responsible for what happens in their room. They can use "share screen" to show the OGS board to the students.
