The 3rd Lancaster Go Tournament was held on Saturday 8th February, this time returning to the Lancaster University Welcome Centre, a former venue of the British Go Congress. The event drew 49 players, matching the turnout of the inaugural Lancaster tournament, with large contingents from the nearby Cheadle Hulme School (CHS), Manchester and Durham, and spanning the most impressive range of ranks yet - from 7 dan to 37 kyu!

Quan Wan (7d Manchester) swept first place in his UK tournament debut, with Yasumasa Furukawa (5d) and Peikai Xue (4d UCL) in joint second place. Seven players achieved three wins: Sarah Marshall (37k Manchester), Muhammed Khurram (20k CHS), Joshua Sing Ching Fai (25k), Olivia Jennison (21k CHS), Amy Upton (12k Durham), Sam Curran (6k Sheffield) and Björn Eurenius (1k Manchester). All took home prizes in the form of cash and chocolates.

The ever-popular side 13x13 tournament saw joint winners of Joshua Sing Ching Fai (25k) and Kin Hei Fong (32k Manchester), both amassing 15 points across 7 games (3 points per win and 1 point per loss). Finally, the remaining four 30+ kyus, all from CHS, were celebrated for their determination: Zarrar Ahmed (37k) and Leonard Chapman (34k) took home Pop-Up 9x9 Go sets for their hard-fought victories, while Milly O’Flaherty (37k) and Eleanor Shaw (33k) shared a final bag of chocolates.

Photos of the prize-winners and scenes from the tournament are available in an online gallery.

A huge thank you to all participants for making the event the usual fun occasion, but especially to Helen Harvey, Martin Harvey and David Barnett for their tireless efforts in bringing the CHS contingent and equipment, refereeing, and reviewing games. We look forward to seeing many of you again next year.
