Go in Britain: 1986
The 1986 Oxford went to Stacey and the Trigantius to J.Y. Lee. Macfadyen was the best of the 86 players at the 1986 British hosted by Brian Timmins at Crewe and Alsager College. Brian Chandler won the lightning and Bristol won the first Nippon Club Cup. T.Mark Hall started as BGA Treasurer.
In The Candidates' five out of six were won by Shaw (3 dan), Roads (2 dan) and Hall (3 dan). Alistair Thompson (1 dan) was the best of those on four wins. However several players failed to take up their Challenger's places and so the League ordering was Macfadyen, Shepperson, Barty, Lee, Hall, Thompson, Roads and Smith. At the Youth Championships in Lyme Regis, Sam Perlo-Freeman won on home ground. Matthew Cocke (12 kyu) won the under-16 title and under-14 winner was Peter Diamond.
In the World Amateur in Tokyo, Terry Stacey came thirteenth and Chan of Hong Kong was the winner. At home Korean J.Y. Lee won Leicester and the Northern, whilst Terry Stacey won Wanstead and the first no smoking tournament in North London. Huddersfield and Sheffield joint team won the Northern Go League.
At the European in Budapest you could ride a tram for 3p, drink beer for 25p and have a good meal out for three pounds. All this was enjoyed by 373 players including 18 Brits. First was Schlemper with a perfect 9 and second was Janssen with 8, both from the Netherlands.
The best of the 108 players at the 1986 Wessex was Terry Stacey. The Nottingham Tournament was won by J.Y. Lee just before he returned from Nottingham to Korea, still unbeaten. Harold Lee won the first and only Three Counties at Bagshot. Alistair Thompson won the fifth Black Bull Handicap at Leigh Sinton near Worcester. Terry Stacey retained the British Championship, 3-1, just as did Furze Platt retained in the Schools Championship in December.
