Manchester Go Club
Welcome to the home page of Manchester Go Club. We exist to play and promote the game of Go, the ancient board game from the Far East, known also as igo (in Japan), weiqi (in China) or baduk (in Korea).
We meet on 2 days of the week, at different venues:
-[1] On Thursday evenings, we meet from about 6pm (and other days by arrangement) in Sandinista ("Casa") pub, 2 Old Bank Street, (off St. Ann's Square), Manchester M2 7PF.
Attendance is usually around 6, but in the range 4 to 20. Regular attendees range from complete beginners up to 3 dan in strength.
-[2] On Sunday afternoons, we meet at the big '200 Degrees café', 75 Mosley Street, Manchester, M2 3HR, near the Art Gallery and the Bank pub. As of Aug. 2025 we are getting 4-20 players each Sunday.
All with an interest in Go are very welcome to come along and join us, without the slightest obligation. Learn the game from us, or try your ability against an experienced player.

Here is a link to a YouTube video of some of the members at the club, made by Mrs Yuko Howes.
At present there is no membership fee, but members are invited to take a look at the British Go Association (BGA), to which Manchester Go Club is affiliated, and join the BGA if you like us & what you see. Go equipment may be obtained online, from various retailers and suppliers, but newcomers are welcome to turn up without a board !
The nearest Go clubs to Manchester - apart from us of course! - are those at Liverpool and Chester. For current details of these and others, click to see a national map and classified listings.
The club organises at least one annual tournament, the "Northern", in the autumn. From 2016, this has been held at Cheadle Hulme School, and here is the tournament page with links to the results.
Please see the tournament listings for other BGA tournaments.
For links to more Go pages, including an introduction to the game, see the
BGA Home Page
We are proud of our long club history - our main annual tournament has been running since 1975.
