BGA Newsletter 307 October 2023
FROM THE EDITOR
This issue, and previous newsletters, are available in the Newsletter Archive in the Members' Area.
Contributions are always welcome, both from our members and others. We ask that they be Go-related and "newsy". The place for debate and general discussion is the BGA open mailing list Gotalk. However, an introduction to a new topic is fine in the Newsletter. A brief introduction to Gotalk, with a link for joining, is on the BGA page Go on the Internet.
Instructions for Contributors: Please use plain text not file-attachments. Keep it fairly brief, and give web-links and contact details. It's good to include pictures. If they are on the internet, send me the URL, otherwise attach the picture files to your email. Send your contribution to newsletter@britgo.org to arrive by the first day of the month.

From David Milne via Gotalk ...
After running a successful online league which started in July, it has been decided to continue running the online league. The first season has just finished and the next season is due to start on Monday 16th October and is open to new entrants.
The league will require you to play an average of one game every two weeks (but games may be rearranged) with time settings of 30 mins + 10s/move and the games will be EGD rated (class D). To enter, email your name, OGS username and approximate rank to daniel.l.milne@gmail.com by Friday 13th October. Also please feel free to email if you would like more information.
Youth Squad Qualifier
Alison Bexfield as team manager ran this 20-player online tournament to select the team to play for us in Europe this winter. As expected Scott Cobbold 4d won the event.
Confucius Cup
This recent event in Dublin attracted 50 players, partly thanks to its European Grand Prix Bonus C status and its 1000 euro first prize. That was won by Seong-Jin Kim 8d from Berlin. Local player John Courtney 1d won the Friday night Rapid.
UK University Tournament (online)
Are you a student? Have you just learned the rules of Go? Are you enjoying the game but you still feel a bit intimidated by the 19X19 board? Are you tired of losing against the 5 dan player that happens to go to your same university club? Then this is tournament is for you. This year, for the first time, the BGA will be holding an online tournament directed at university students whom have just started learning Go. The tournament (non-rated) is free of charge and will be played online on OGS (online-go.com) during the course of three weeks starting Monday 23rd October (with two games a week). Full information is available in the following spreadsheet where the draws will be published. To sign up for the tournament please complete this Entry Form and verify that your name appears in the list of registered players. If you are unsure as to what rank you should register as ask for suggestions from the more veteran members of your university club.
ADMIN
BGA Public Liability Insurance - Update.
The Board is clarifying the extent of the BGA’s Public Liability Insurance. At the moment it appears only to cover events run by the BGA itself. However, the Board intends to take out a separate insurance policy which will cover most events, including tournaments and teaching events, run by affiliated Clubs or BGA members: we are busy seeking to resolve the small print to define exactly what is covered. It is unlikely that any insurance taken out by the BGA will cover regular club meetings. If a club decides it needs such insurance it will need to take out its own cover.
