7th World Women's Amateur 06/11/98-08/11/98

Helen Harvey (1k) was Britain's rep and came 12th with 3/6. Winner of the Sotetsu Cup was Japan's Chifumi Yamashita, second North Korea, third South Korea, fourth China and fifth Singapore.

Three Peaks (N.Yorks) 07/11/98 & 08/11/98

Organisers Toby Manning and Sue Pitchford had a record entry of 44. The prizes were presented by Colin Elsdon of the Marton Arms. He said that the fund to buy cutting equipment for the fire service had achieved its objective, but the Marton Arms continues to raise funds, now for the Ingleton Ambulance Station. All proceeds from this tournament went to this.

Many of the prizes were bottles of Riggwelter, which is a strong North Yorkshire beer. It's also a sheep that has fallen on its side.

Three Peaks (Yorkshire) 11/11/00-12/11/00

52 players met at the Marton Arms Hotel, Thornton-in Lonsdale. The winner on 5/5 was John Rickard (4 dan Cambridge), runner up was Lutz Mattner (4 dan Leeds) on 4/5. Prizes also for 5/5 to Jil Segerman (9 kyu Manchester), and for 4/5 to Mathias Kegelmann (1 kyu Birmingham), Richard Moulds (3 kyu Manchester) and Jason Fisher (8 kyu Birmingham). Proceeds from the tournament go to the Tim Hazleden Memorial Fund, which was supporting the local ambulance service in Ingleton, but now is supporting the repair fund for the local church.

National Small Board (Cambridge) 19/11/00

28 players, including nine aged 14 or younger, took part. It was part of a chess and go event with almost 120 competitors in total.

Northern 07/09/96-08/09/96

The annual two day go bash at Manchester had an entry of 57 plus a couple more who went to see the sights of the North-west rather than playing. In an exciting finish three top players ended up on 5/6 having beaten one of the others. On tie break Matthew Macfadyen (6 dan Leamington) behind the two 4 dans who were joint winners: T.Mark Hall (Bristol) and Matthew Cocke (Norwich). Other prize winners for 4/6 were: Peter Yim (1 kyu Manchester), Ed Blockley (2 kyu Malvern), John Walsh (4 kyu Manchester), Richard Thompson (6 kyu Leicester), Mike Vidler (6 kyu Manchester), Adam Atkinson (9 kyu Brighton), Tom Summerscales (9 kyu Culcheth), Jason Fisher (12 kyu Manchester) and Adrian Abrahams (15 kyu).

Go in Britain: 1996

1996 started with the traditional London Open tournament held over the new year holiday. Again sponsored by Hitachi, we were pleased to have Mr Imamura presenting the prizes, including the camcorder won by Matthew Macfadyen in the winners' lottery. It was also good to have 140 players, forty percent of whom were from abroad. This time, as an experiment, the first period of overtime was one stone in five minutes to allow reflection on the possible game result. Also new was the awarding of European Grand Prix points after six rounds. The points went to Guo Juan, Zhang, Miyakawa, Gerlach, Colmez, Macfadyen, Laatikainen, Danek, Shepperson and Emil Nijhuis. The top four then played knockout for the last tow rounds to determine the tournament winner. In the final Shutai Zhang won, despite having lost to Guo earlier in the tournament. In the Lightning Miyakawa beat Zhang in the final, and Marcus Keinappel (7 kyu) beat Matthew Cocke to come third.
