Macfadyen's first win of the year

Wanstead returned to its old early year spot, but kept the same Wanstead House venue in East London. Matthew Macfadyen got his first tournament win of the year. Other players winning all three were: Mike Cumpstey (3 kyu Manchester), Eric Hall (5 kyu Swindon) and Gary Gibson (7 kyu Wanstead). 32 players took part.

President wins Maidenhead-Furze Platt Tournament:

60 players attended the HQ of HITACHI Europe Ltd for the 19th Maidenhead Tournament. Jon Diamond (4 dan) was judged the winner on tie-break from David Ward (3 dan) and Tim Hunt (3 dan), all winning 2 games. Players winning 3/3 were Phil beck (1 dan, Cambridge), Geoff Kaniuk (3 kyu Cambridge), Fancisco Divers (5 kyu London), Xinyi Lu (5 kyu Maidenhead) and John Collins (12 kyu St Albans). In addition all on 2/3 won a prize thanks to generous sponsorship from HITACHI. Team winner was the Central London team with 75 percent. There was no prize awarded in the 13x13.

Candidates '85 by Brian Chandler
Candidates again. Same old crowd I suppose - have you noticed that the only difference between this year's tournament and last year's is that everybody looks a year older (modulo a few beards on or off). Turn up at Francis Roads' on Friday night (THANK YOU Francis and Judith for your hospitality) to find Richard Granville sharing the music room. Who's entered then eh? Will Andrew Daly be there? Frank May? Quentin Mills? The latest up-and-coming shodan (Who he - Ed). John Who? Jon Diamond? Didn't he used to be British champion in the days of Goddard and Prescott (who they - Ed).
