NEWS

Xi'an, China

We were invited to send a team of four youngsters to a Tournament in Xi'an, China. We would like to have fielded a stronger team, but the event was held in the UK summer, with holidays already planned, and the UK's oldest teenagers expected their A-level results on the day we left England, so they were unable to accept a China place. The UK Team of mostly double-digit kyu players - Edmund Smith (3k), Rowan Borrow, Daniel Gascoyne and Amy Upton - didn't manage to win any of the seven matches played, as they always faced stronger opponents - all 28 being dan players. Any UK team would have struggled. Even so, the players thoroughly enjoyed the whole Chinese adventure. Much learning and experience - and many memories - were gained by all. All our players recorded most of their games, and benefited from those reviewed in Xi'an, with reviews of the remaining games to be received when back in England.

We thank the generous sponsorship of the Chinese for inviting us to send a team.

2019/20 European Youth Go Team Championship

This competition consists of International matches played online, and will take place over the winter; Alison Bexfield will again be the Team Manager.

Youth Camp 2019

The third residential Youth Camp took place at Caythorpe at the end of August, with 26 particpants. As before, it was a mixture of outdoor activities, Go games and mentoring, aimed at those in school year 6 or older.

Youth Camp 2020

We will be running the Youth camp at Caythorpe again in 2020. The probable dates are 24-27 August.

British Youth 2019

This will take place at Brownsover Hall, Rugby, on 30 November 2019.

Thre will be a mixture of even games in the championship and handicap games after elimination, played on full-sized 19-by-19 boards. Beginners and those new to the game are made particularly welcome and can select to play most of their games on 13x13 boards.

Youth titles at U8, U10, U12, U14, U16 and U18 will be contested, with trophies for each age group. In addition the titles of overall British Youth Champion and British Schools Team Champions will be decided. There is also a youth trophy that was presented by the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper, the Castledine Trophy for the best school and a junior school trophy.

The entry fee will be £15, which includes tea, coffee and a buffet lunch.

Cambridge Junior's 25th Anniversary, incorporating the UK Go Challenge Finals.

Cambridge Junior Chess and Go Club is 25 years old this year, and to celebrate they are hosting a day of Go on Sunday 13 October at Storey's Field Centre, Eddington Avenue, Cambridge CB3 1AA. Arrive by 10:00, prize giving 17:00.

The format will be a 13x13 tournament open to all. Stronger players compete for the British Small Board title by double elimination. All juniors will be competing for age-band titles for boys and for girls in the 2019 UK Go Challenge Finals.

Teaching

There are two courses being run in Europe aimed at young players.

Firstly is Yunguseng Dojang

Secondly is the EGF Academy.

Both schools expect you to play some serious games of Go, which are then analysed for you by strong players.

An alterntive is Guo Juan's Go School. She offers a 1 month free trial with lectures at €1 (€99 for a year) or €49 for access to her training system.

The BGA offers a 50% grant to any Junior who enrolls in one of these schools.

European Youth Go Tournament 2020

This will take place in Stubicke Toplice, near Zagreb, Croatia from 12 - 14 March.

Catalin Taranu, on behalf of the European Go Federation, has set up a series of European Youth tournaments ("The SEYGO Tour" ), as follows:-

• 3 - 5 February was in Romania
• 11 - 12 May was in Germany
• 1 - 8 July was in Croatia (Summer Camp)
• 17 - 18 August was in Vienna
• 5 - 6 October in Geneva (details to be confirmed)
• 14 - 15 December in Amsterdam
