Eligibility Changes for British Championships and Representative Teams
The eagle-eyed amongst you may have noticed a recent change made to the eligibility conditions for the British Championships.
The new eligibility criteria are shown in section A5 of the Championship rules, and for the Youth Championship in section F5 on the same Eligibility Rules page.
The intent behind the changes is to:
1. Clarify the rules on eligibility, by defining it in terms of either holding a British passport, or being a resident of the UK. Exactly how we measure those criteria has also been clarified.
2. Significantly reduce the waiting time for foreign nationals resident in the UK before they become eligible to be title holders. This has gone down from 5 years to 36 months.
3. Further reduce the criteria for under-18s in our age band championships, ensuring that all who are 'normally living in the UK' are eligible to be title holders.
Our rules on eligibility for representing the UK in international events refer back to the Championship rules, and so as a result have also been reduced in line with the above. They can be seen in our policies.
