UK Youth Beat Romania
The UK youth squad won their third round match 3-2 against Romania yesterday in the European Youth Go team Competition. With one round to go this leaves the UK in third place.
On paper the UK had the slight edge over Romania, but the games were closely matched to within two grades so anything was possible. Our two U12 players finished first and both took a win. Yanyi played a competent game to win by resignation giving him is third win in as many matches. Blake made his debut for the squad this season with an exciting game. Taking a good start he managed to put a very large group of his into difficulty with it struggling to make a second eye. Blake showed strong fighting spirit to keep the pressure on his opponent and finally broke his group out to secure life. He held his nerve to win the game by 14.5 points. Our board three, Alvina, finished next with another strong performance to take our third win and the match. Our top two boards, Scott and Alain, were unable to overcome their opponents, although Scott fought hard to lose by only 8.5 points.
There is all to play for in the final round. Ukraine remain unbeaten, having beaten France, and it is likely we will play them next. Germany beat Turkey to move up to third.
