Financial Support for Overseas Representation

Policy Statement

The BGA will provide a grant to all those selected by the Board to represent the UK at International Tournaments where the organisers do not provide money covering the airfare. This Grant will be:
  • £100 for events in mainland Europe
  • £250 for events elsewhere.
How it is Implemented

This policy currently covers the following tournaments:
  • The World Amateur Go Championships
  • The Korean Prime Minister’s Cup
and may cover other tournaments. For the avoidance of doubt it only covers tournaments where participation requires the Board’s endorsement, although the Board may decide to provide a grant for other overseas tournaments: such cases will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Where the organisers provide support to cover the air fare the grant will be reduced on a 2:1 basis (e.g. if the organisers provide £300 then the grant will be reduced by £150).

It is normal practice for the organisers to cover all travel and subsistence costs in the host country. Where the organisers do not provide any support, the grant will be doubled.

This policy does not cover International events held in the UK.

Supporting Information

The “normal” procedure is for the host country to cover all costs incurred within the host country, but not the airfare or costs incurred in the home country (e.g. visa fees). However, Korea, Japan and now China do not require a Visa for British nationals.

Players will also have the costs of travel (and possibly an overnight stay) to the home airport.

In addition Youth players may receive support from the Youth Go Trust
