Cambridge Novices 2005: Results
There were a record 21 players this year at the Trigantius Novices’ tournament in Cambridge. In the morning there was a teaching session, covering Capturing Races, Tactical Tricks and Life & Death. The tournament took place in the afternoon. Most games were played on 13×13 boards but a few were played on 9×9.
It was great to see so many players, with four active junior clubs in East Anglia represented—the Cambridge Junior Chess & Go Club, Norwich School, Cedarwood School in Ipswich and Milton Primary School near Cambridge. It was also nice to see some parents of Go-playing juniors joining in the tournament, and also some players from further afield including reigning national under-8 champion Thomas Meehan from Solihull.
This was the first time the players from Norwich School had come to a tournament, but Christian, Chen and Hugh proved to be strong and they all finished at the top of the field. In the end it was Chen who took first place.
In the race for the Under-14 prize, it was Duncan Bell who came out on top with 10 points. The Under-10 prize was also closely fought but the winner was Sam Smith-Howell from Cedarwood School in Ipswich.
The clear winners of the team prize were Norwich School with 32 points. Cambridge Chess & Go were second as their top three players scored 25 points.
There was a puzzles competition and this was won by Ingrid Jendrzejewski with 5 correct solutions out of 6, Owen Walker was second with 4.
