European Go Congress
7 youth players attended the 2024 European Go Congress in Toulouse, France, during the last week of July and the first week of August.
Congratulations in particular to:
Scott Cobbold, 4 dan, who won the Under-18's section of the misnamed "Little Prince" Youth Tournament with a perfect 5/5, and who also achieved 5/10 in the Main Tournament, 5/7 in the "Rapid" and 3/5 in the "Weekend"
Alvina Kwok, 2 dan, who got 6/10 in the Main Tournament, 5/7 in the "Rapid" and 3/5 in the "Weekend"
Edmund Smith, 1 kyu, who got 6/9 in the Main Tournament, 5/6 in the "Rapid" and 3/5 in the "Weekend"
Michael Mitcham-Harding, 3 kyu, who got 3/5 in the Main Tournament
Lukasz Kudla, 7 kyu, who got 3/5 in the Main Tournament
Youth Summer Camp
The seventh annual youth camp was attended by only 8 players; they ranged from 29 kyu to 7 kyu and 9 years to 15 years old. Again Caythorpe Court in Lincolnshire was the venue and as well as Go lessons and playing, the youngsters were able to enjoy pole climbing, canoeing, archery, fencing, tunnel trail and zip wire. The Go-teachers this year were Helen Harvey and Tony Atkins, with guest teachers Toby Manning and Huw Mort on one day each.
Winner of the camp handicap tournament was Jed Lau from Oxford and second was Clinton Yu from Manchester. Winners of the Pair Go (Doubles) were Olivia Jennison (Cheadle Hulme) and Elijah Whitbread (Cambridge).
Youth Grand Prix
The Youth Grand Prix runs each year from January to December: you get points for entering tournaments, and more points for each win. To date 53 players have participated: Clinton Yu, 18 kyu, is leading the competition with 475 points, followed by Ryan Zhang, 3 dan (390) and Megan Upton, 13 kyu (310). However, with the Autumn still to come there is plenty of opportunity for others to overhaul these three.
