The book is primarily a problem book, divided into sections 15k to 5k, 5k to 1k and dan level. There follows excerpts from four professional games where edge plays were instrumental in deciding the game. The book may be too specialised to make much difference to your game, but it’s definitely a fun read with some surprising formations. It was reviewed in BGJ 152.

Shikshin takes a very similar approach to Hunter (Counting Liberties and Winning Capturing Races) in his classification of capturing races. The style and examples are of course individual. I may be chauvinistic in giving preference to the British author; then again, Shikshin is tutor to the Russian team and the book is more recent.

Yuan Zhou is a popular teacher and writer. He starts with a fairly short explanation of the ideas behind the Chinese opening, then illustrates these with examples from ten recent games showing the development of the early fighting. The second half of the book merely contains full game records of all games mentioned, which doesn’t seem to add much to one’s understanding of the Chinese.

This slim book takes 21 games, following each through the early stages and posing a total of 150 problems, typically with three choices. Explanations are short but adequate. The level of the book seems to be from mid-SDK to low dan.

This book is at a similar level to In the Beginning from the Elementary Series, and has attracted very positive reviews for the simple and clear explanations. It sets out 20 strategic principles under three main headings – fuseki, shape and strategy. It takes time and practice to be quite at home with the ideas and many high SDK could still benefit from rereading the book to ensure there are no gaps in understanding.
