Part of the British Championship, held to select most of the players who will compete in the Challenger’s League until 2019, and the Title Match from 2020. Normally held over three days on the Early May bank holiday weekend.
In order to play, players must be eligible — "British" (by nationality or long-term residency) and BGA members — and qualify — active and performing highly in tournaments. To qualify, in the past shodan and kyu players had to earn places at tournaments, but now players are selected by rating (ending a full tournament with rating of 1900 or higher in the year ending 31st March).
You may be sent an email invitation. Qualifiers for the next Candidates' are listed here automatically if they have EGD country code UK.
In the winners' list, ties between players with same number of wins are not broken.
With no event played in 2020 and 2021, the 2021 title match players were selected at the British Go Congress in autumn 2021. For 2022 an extended 3 year qualifying period was used. 2023 was at The Open University, Milton Keynes, and since 2024 at Leicester.
